Bengaluru: Arshdeep Singh aims for Test debut after Duleep Trophy performance

'Very rarely do I get the chance to play red-ball cricket': Arshdeep Singh after North Zone’s 52-run win in Duleep Trophy

Arshdeep Singh’s Red-Ball Return

India pacer Arshdeep Singh is looking to strengthen his case for a Test debut following his recent return to first-class cricket in the Duleep Trophy. The 27-year-old, who has represented India in 18 ODIs and 91 T20Is, had not participated in a red-ball match for nearly a year before his appearance in the 2026 Duleep Trophy. This rare opportunity in the longest format allowed him to assess his bowling stamina and demonstrate his skills with the red ball.

Arshdeep played a significant role in North Zone’s 52-run victory over West Zone in Bengaluru. His performance included figures of 3/53 and 1/40 across the two innings, contributing to his team’s win. He expressed that opportunities to play red-ball cricket are infrequent, making this particular match a valuable chance to showcase his abilities and test his endurance over multiple overs.

Following the game, Arshdeep remarked on his rhythm, stating it felt good after a long time away from red-ball cricket. He mentioned dedicating many hours to practice, which he found rewarding. Despite feeling sore, he described it as a “good sore” because it came with a victory for his team.

Adapting Training for Red-Ball Cricket

Arshdeep revealed that he adjusted his training regimen specifically for the Duleep Trophy, focusing on bowling with the red ball. He explained that his training is highly specific, tailored to the type of season approaching. When a white-ball season is imminent, he practices with the white ball, and similarly, for red-ball cricket, his preparation shifts accordingly.

He highlighted a key aspect of red-ball cricket: the repeated opportunities it offers bowlers to challenge batters. According to Arshdeep, his head coach, Ajay Sharma, emphasized that even if wickets are not taken with the new ball, there is always a chance to make an impact in a second spell. This characteristic, he noted, is the “beauty” of red-ball cricket, providing bowlers with multiple chances to succeed.

Arshdeep also reflected on his past experience in county cricket, having played five County Championship matches for Kent in 2023. He considers county cricket to be a valuable experience, but acknowledged that India’s demanding schedule, which includes the IPL, domestic white-ball season, and other crucial domestic matches, makes another stint in England challenging. He stressed the importance of prioritizing domestic cricket in India to maintain its high standard.

Tactics on Bengaluru Pitch

Discussing the pitch conditions in Bengaluru, Arshdeep noted that bowlers had to rely more on strategic thinking than on natural movement. He explained that on such wickets, it becomes a mental game, where success can come alongside moments of being hit for boundaries. The approach, he stated, is to accept both outcomes and continue to try different strategies.

He further elaborated that while helpful pitches that offer seam or swing allow bowlers to maintain patience and consistently hit good lengths, flatter surfaces demand a more tactical approach. On wickets with little assistance but variable bounce, bowlers must innovate with field placements and try different variations to trouble the batters. This adaptability, he believes, is crucial for performing well across various conditions.

Arshdeep’s performance in the Duleep Trophy marks a significant step in his aspiration for a Test cap, showcasing his commitment to adapting his game for the longer format after a year-long gap from red-ball cricket.
