Fernandez secures dominant British MotoGP victory, Martin extends championship lead

Raul Fernandez of the SuperFile Trackhouse MotoGP Team achieved a dominant victory at the British MotoGP at Silverstone, marking his second Grand Prix win and his first of 2026. He led the race from the start, overcoming a setback from Saturday’s sprint race where he crashed out. This performance saw him finish 2.5 seconds ahead of the competition.

Jorge Martin, who started from pole position, encountered technical issues at Turn One, briefly dropping to fourth place. Despite this, Martin recovered to secure second place behind Fernandez. This result allowed him to extend his championship lead to 31 points over his teammate, Marco Bezzecchi.

Race Highlights and Incidents

Fernandez made a strong start from P2, taking the holeshot ahead of Bezzecchi. While Martin and Ai Ogura battled through Turns 1 and 2, Marc Marquez moved into third. Martin soon retaliated, but Fernandez established a significant lead, setting a new race lap record by Lap 3 and creating a gap of 2 seconds.

The race saw several incidents, with multiple riders crashing out. On Laps 6 and 7, Enea Bastianini fell at Turn 17, Iker Lecuona crashed at Turn 12, and Cal Crutchlow tumbled at Turn 6. Francesco Bagnaia also fell at Turn 7 on Lap 8, at the same location as the previous year. Earlier in the race, Alex Rins and Joan Mir were out after a collision on the first lap.

On Lap 9, Martin moved ahead of his teammate Bezzecchi. Meanwhile, Alex Marquez advanced to third. However, disaster struck for Ogura, who fell at Turn 16, ending his Grand Prix. A mistake at Turn 1 caused Alex Marquez to drop to fifth, though he later regained fourth place, passing Pedro Acosta.

Championship Implications and Final Laps

In the closing stages, Fernandez maintained a substantial lead, at one point over four seconds ahead of the opposition, led by Martin and then Bezzecchi. Although the gap between Fernandez and Martin narrowed to 3.4 seconds with four laps remaining, and then to 3.1 seconds a lap later, Fernandez’s victory was not threatened.

Fabio Di Giannantonio and Marc Marquez renewed their rivalry at Turn 3 on Lap 18, with Di Giannantonio getting the better of the reigning World Champion and then pursuing Acosta. Fernandez ultimately secured his first Grand Prix victory of the season, becoming the 12th different winner at Silverstone in the last 12 British Grands Prix.

At the finish line, Fernandez held a 2.5-second advantage over Championship leader Martin. Bezzecchi finished third, completing an all-Aprilia podium and moving up to second in the Championship standings. Alex Marquez was the first Ducati rider to finish, securing fourth place, ahead of Acosta and Di Giannantonio.

Marc Marquez finished seventh, placing him 40 points behind Martin in the title race. Brad Binder achieved his first back-to-back top tens of the year in eighth, while Luca Marini was the top Honda rider in ninth. Diogo Moreira completed the top ten.

The second half of the season has now begun, with Martin extending his lead. Ogura, who failed to finish for the first time this season, dropped points, moving from second to third in the Championship standings. MotoGP recently announced an extension of its contract with Silverstone, ensuring the British Grand Prix remains on the calendar until at least 2028. The next race of 2026 is the Aragon Grand Prix in Spain on 30 August.
