Toronto: Iga Swiatek advances to fourth round, Alexandra Eala progresses

Swiatek’s Dominant Performance
Iga Swiatek, the No. 7 seed, secured her spot in the fourth round of the Canadian Open with a decisive straight-sets victory over Viktorija Golubic. Swiatek conceded only three games during the match, showcasing a commanding performance in the third round.
The Polish former World No. 1, who reached the semi-finals of this event in 2023, defeated Golubic with a score of 6-2, 6-1. The match concluded in 66 minutes, highlighting Swiatek’s efficiency on the court.
Golubic holds a unique position in Swiatek’s career history as the only player to have defeated her in the first round of a Grand Slam. This occurred at Wimbledon 2019, when Swiatek was 18 years old. Since that encounter, Swiatek has maintained an undefeated record against Golubic in their subsequent three matches, dropping only five games across their last two meetings.
Following her victory, Swiatek expressed satisfaction with her play. She noted that despite a less than smooth start to the first game, she was able to reset and find her rhythm, which allowed the match to proceed in her favour.
Swiatek is now set to face either the No. 10 seed Marta Kostyuk or the No. 19 seed Madison Keys in her pursuit of a second quarter-final appearance in Canada.

Eala Continues Strong Run
In other tournament news, Alexandra Eala continued her strong showing on the North American hard-court circuit. The No. 25 seed advanced to the third round in Toronto by defeating Alycia Parks in a three-set match.
Eala’s victory over Parks was secured with a score of 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. This performance comes shortly after Eala claimed her first singles title on the WTA Tour Driven by Mercedes-Benz at the Mubadala Citi DC Open in Washington on Monday. The 20-year-old Filipina quickly adapted to the new venue, returning to winning form in her Toronto debut just two days after her previous triumph.
Eala demonstrated early dominance in the match, particularly in the opening set. She reeled off five consecutive games from a 1-1 tie, ultimately taking the set 6-1. During this set, Eala did not face any break points on her serve and consistently applied pressure on Parks from the baseline.
Parks mounted a comeback in the second set. After navigating two challenging service games early on, the American successfully saved four break points to hold her serve, taking a 3-2 lead. She then secured a crucial break in the 10th game, winning the set 6-4 and forcing a decider.
The third set saw an exchange of early breaks between the two players. However, Eala gained a decisive advantage by securing a break in the fifth game, moving ahead 3-2. She maintained control from that point, winning the subsequent three games to complete her victory in 1 hour and 51 minutes.
Both Swiatek and Eala’s advancements highlight their current form in the tournament. Swiatek’s quick win underscores her strong position as a contender, while Eala’s resilience in a three-set match demonstrates her ability to perform consistently on the hard-court circuit.
Swiatek’s next match will determine her entry into the quarter-finals, facing either Kostyuk or Keys.
