Canadian Open Tennis: Poland’s Iga Swiatek storms into semifinals with straight-set win over Russia’s Diana Shnaider

Swiatek’s Dominant Quarterfinal Performance

Iga Swiatek secured her spot in the Canadian Open semifinals with a commanding 6-2, 6-1 victory over Diana Shnaider in Toronto. The match, which lasted 64 minutes according to one report and 68 minutes according to another, saw Swiatek drop only three games.

The No. 7 seed Swiatek demonstrated strong form throughout the quarterfinal. She broke Shnaider in the opening game of the match and again to take a 5-2 lead in the first set. Shnaider struggled with forehand errors, contributing to Swiatek’s control of the set.

The second set mirrored the first in terms of Swiatek’s dominance. She broke Shnaider for a 2-1 lead and maintained her momentum, winning the final six games of the match. Swiatek sealed a second break in the set for a 5-1 lead with a cross-court winner. She concluded the contest when Shnaider sent a forehand long on match point.

Swiatek did not face any break points during her seven service games, highlighting her strong performance on serve. She won 23 of 26 first-serve points, achieving her best mark of the season with an 88.5 percent first-serve points won. Her clean play was also evident in her unforced error count, with only eight unforced errors, her fewest in a match this season, while Shnaider committed 12 unforced errors.

Path to the Semifinals and Career Milestones

This victory marks Swiatek’s 23rd WTA 1000 semifinal. Since the format’s introduction in 2009, Swiatek has reached a higher rate of semifinals than most players, with a 48.9 percent rate, trailing only Serena Williams (53.1 percent). Only three players have reached more WTA 1000 semifinals than Swiatek: Simona Halep (29), Serena Williams (26), and Victoria Azarenka (24). Swiatek is currently tied with Agnieszka Radwanska at 23 semifinals.

With her advancement in Toronto, and having previously reached the semifinals in Montreal, Swiatek has now reached the last four at 10 of the 11 current WTA 1000 event locations. Wuhan remains the sole exception. Her recent performance in Toronto follows a Round of 16 win over Marta Kostyuk, which was described as having some drama, unlike her stress-free quarterfinal.

Swiatek’s career win rate against Top 20 players stands at 67.8 percent. Since 1990, only Steffi Graf (82.1 percent), Serena Williams (75.3 percent), Monica Seles (70.4 percent), and Martina Hingis (67.9 percent) have a higher career win rate against Top 20 opponents.

Looking Ahead: Semifinal Matchup

In the semifinals, Swiatek is set to face No. 9 seed Elina Svitolina. Svitolina advanced to the semifinals after a comeback win against No. 16 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova, with a score of 3-6, 6-0, 6-3, in a match that lasted 1 hour and 33 minutes.

Svitolina’s victory over Alexandrova saw her rally after losing the first set. Alexandrova had been in strong form, having defeated world number one Aryna Sabalenka in the previous round. However, Svitolina leveled the match in the second set and took a 4-1 lead in the third set. Despite dropping two games while leading 5-1, Svitolina regrouped to secure the win.

Swiatek has a career record of four wins and three losses against Svitolina. However, Svitolina claimed both of their matchups this season, winning in Indian Wells and Rome, both in three sets. The semifinal match between Swiatek and Svitolina is scheduled for Wednesday.
