India Secures Dominant Victory Over Sri Lanka in First Test

India boost WTC prospects with big win in Galle

India secured a 165-run victory over Sri Lanka in the first Test in Galle, taking a 1-0 lead in the two-match ICC World Test Championship series. This win has boosted India’s position in the WTC Standings, moving them up one place to fifth with a PCT of 53.33. The triumph keeps India in contention for a spot in next year’s World Test Championship Final at The Oval.

Manav Suthar delivered a standout performance, achieving his maiden ten-wicket haul in Tests. The left-arm spinner finished with bowling figures of 6/55 in the second innings, following a 4/76 performance in the first innings, to secure a total of 10 wickets in the match. Suthar, who made his Test debut against Afghanistan in June, achieved a six-wicket haul.

Suthar’s Record-Breaking Performance

Suthar, at 24 years and 16 days, became the youngest Indian to claim a 10-wicket haul in an away Test. His match-winning effort helped India secure the victory. He joined an elite list of Indian spinners to achieve a 10-wicket match haul in an away Test, which includes Ravichandran Ashwin, Bishan Singh Bedi, Erapalli Prasanna, Bhagwat Chandrasekhar, Anil Kumble, and Harbhajan Singh.

Suthar’s performance also made him the fourth Indian to take a 10-wicket haul against Sri Lanka, alongside Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh, and Ravichandran Ashwin. Three of the eight 10-wicket hauls recorded by Indians against Sri Lanka have now occurred in Galle.

Devdutt Padikkal was named the Player of the Match for his contribution of 211 runs in the Test. Padikkal scored 167 runs in the first innings and followed it with 84 runs off 128 deliveries in the second innings. Alongside KL Rahul, who scored 82 runs, Padikkal helped India amass a total of 462 in their first innings, setting a strong foundation for the win.

KL Rahul commented on the team’s strategy on Day 5, stating, “We were trying to get the wickets as quickly as we could. Obviously, they had a decent partnership and once we broke that partnership, we felt like we were right back in the game, and we could, once we got into their tail, we knew that we could get the wickets early.”

Match Details and Series Outlook

Chasing a total of 372, Sri Lanka had lost four wickets by Stumps on Day 4. Dhananjaya de Silva, who scored 59 runs, and Sonal Dinusha, with 84 runs, built crucial partnerships in the middle order. Ravindra Jadeja broke the stand by dismissing Dhananjaya de Silva in the first session of the final day.

Suthar then ran through the home batting lineup, claiming the final four wickets, including that of Sonal Dinusha. This victory marked India’s 600th Test match. Sri Lanka, currently sixth in the WTC Standings with a PCT of 33.33, has now gone without a Test victory against India, including defeats.

The series will now move to Colombo, where the second and final Test is scheduled to begin on August 23.

Shubman Gill, the captain, praised Suthar’s performance, remarking, “He’s been bowling magnificently, even in the first match that he played in India (vs Afghanistan), and in this match. He looks like a very promising guy and someone who can play for India for a very long time.” The celebrations in the Indian dressing room reflected Suthar’s significant contribution, with players exchanging hugs and giving attention to the match ball.

The second Test will be held at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo, from August 23-27.
