Munich: Jamal Musiala collapses after scoring in Bayern victory

Major scare: Jamal Musiala suddenly collapses mid-game just minutes after scoring, Bayern star rush to help

A concerning incident occurred during Bayern Munich‘s 3-1 victory against RB Leipzig when midfielder Jamal Musiala collapsed on the field shortly after scoring his team’s third goal. The incident took place in the closing stages of the match at the Allianz Arena, just minutes after Musiala had found the back of the net in the 81st minute.

Musiala’s goal, which sealed the 3-1 win, was assisted by new teammate Ismael Saibari, who was making his first appearance for Bayern after joining from PSV Eindhoven. However, the celebratory mood quickly shifted as Musiala went down in the opposition half, appearing to lose consciousness for a brief period.

On-field response and initial assessment

Saibari was quick to react, rushing to Musiala’s side and calling for medical assistance. Several other Bayern players also gathered around their teammate. Referee Robert Hartmann immediately halted the match, allowing the emergency doctor to enter the pitch.

After a brief examination, Musiala was able to get back on his feet and walk off the field under his own power, though he appeared unsteady and shaken. He was subsequently replaced by young Senegalese forward Bara Njie in the 86th minute. The exact cause of the episode remained unclear immediately following the match.

According to reports, Musiala experienced a spell of weakness, complaining of dizziness and circulatory problems. These issues were linked to the demanding conditions, with temperatures in Munich reaching approximately 33 degrees during the game. Bayern’s board member for sport, Max Eberl, provided an update, stating that the most important thing was Musiala’s well-being. Eberl mentioned that initial examinations by the club’s doctors had not revealed any concerning issues, and Musiala is expected to rest and recover over the coming days.

Manuel Neuer, Bayern’s captain, also commented on the situation, indicating that the club was awaiting a clearer understanding of what transpired. Neuer expressed hope for Musiala’s quick recovery, stating, “It will become clear what it was. But of course we are keeping our fingers crossed.”

Other injury concerns for Bayern

The incident involving Musiala was not the only injury concern for Bayern during their penultimate pre-season friendly. Midfielder Konrad Laimer was forced off the pitch earlier in the match. Laimer sustained an injury after a challenge with Leipzig’s David Raum, experiencing severe pain around his right leg, with his thigh or knee seemingly affected.

Eberl explained that Laimer took a knock, and his foot quickly swelled, leading to his precautionary removal from the game. Laimer was reportedly unable to walk without support and was not moving freely. The severity and recovery timeline for Laimer’s injury are yet to be determined, with medical examinations pending. The Austrian midfielder had recently renewed his contract and featured in recent warm-up matches, enjoying the trust of the coaching staff.

Additionally, Min-jae Kim was substituted after just over an hour due to thigh problems. These multiple injury scares occurred despite Bayern securing a 3-1 victory. The match saw Luis Díaz open the scoring for Bayern, followed by an equalizer from Leipzig’s Brajan Gruda. Bayern then regained their lead through Nathanael Brown, another summer arrival, before Musiala completed the scoring.

This victory was part of Bayern’s preparations for the upcoming domestic season. The team is scheduled to face Borussia Dortmund in the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup the following weekend. Before that, Bayern has one final friendly match scheduled for Tuesday against 1. FC Heidenheim. Their Bundesliga opener against Stuttgart is set for August 28.
