England Test coaching role: Michael Vaughan questions Stephen Fleming’s delayed start

'We don't have an MS Dhoni': Ex-England captain's blunt warning to Stephen Fleming

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has expressed concerns regarding the timing of Stephen Fleming’s appointment as England’s new Test coach. Vaughan believes Fleming should have assumed the role immediately, rather than delaying his full integration until the tour of South Africa in December.

Fleming, who was named as the successor to Brendon McCullum, will not oversee the upcoming three-Test home series against Pakistan, which is scheduled to begin on August 19 at Headingley. Instead, Marcus Trescothick will serve as interim head coach for this series. Vaughan highlighted that this delay represents a missed opportunity for Fleming to acclimate to the English cricket environment before significant assignments, such as the Ashes.

Writing in the Telegraph, Vaughan emphasised the importance of small details, such as gaining experience at grounds like Edgbaston and familiarising himself with individuals involved in English cricket, including county coaches. These elements, according to Vaughan, are crucial for winning major trophies and were overlooked during McCullum’s tenure.

Concerns over coaching role’s appeal

Vaughan suggested that England’s willingness to accommodate Fleming’s preferred timeline might indicate a decrease in the appeal of the coaching position. He noted that it could also reflect a degree of desperation on England’s part to appoint a candidate on their terms, rather than the team’s.

Fleming’s appointment follows a successful period with Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he guided the team to five IPL titles and two Champions League trophies alongside captain MS Dhoni. However, Vaughan cautioned that the environment Fleming will encounter in England will be significantly different.

Vaughan pointed out that England captain Joe Root does not offer the same dynamic as Dhoni did at Chennai. He noted that Dhoni was instrumental in leading the Chennai Super Kings, and Fleming benefited from strong backroom coaches, such as Eric Simons, who was a bowling coach skilled in generating white-ball swing. Vaughan speculated that Fleming’s approach might lead to a renewed focus on skill-based bowling in the England Test team, moving away from an emphasis on sheer pace.

Root’s return to captaincy

Meanwhile, Joe Root is set to return to the England Test captaincy under interim head coach Trescothick, before Fleming takes over for the winter tour of South Africa. Vaughan believes that the return to captaincy could be a significant motivational factor for Root in the later stages of his career, providing him with a renewed sense of enthusiasm for Test cricket.

Root had previously stepped down from the captaincy in 2022, citing the toll the role had taken on him after a series of matches without a win. Vaughan suggested that Root had faced a challenging period during his initial captaincy, particularly with England’s focus on the 50-over World Cup and the impact of the Covid pandemic.

Vaughan also expressed that Fleming’s experience as a manager and tactician, along with his ability to work with McCullum, were key factors in his selection. Fleming’s appointment is for a four-year deal, which includes coaching England in the next two Ashes series. He has extensive experience in Test cricket, having made 111 appearances for New Zealand and scoring 7,172 runs.

Fleming himself has expressed excitement about joining England as Test Coach, calling it one of the most prestigious coaching positions in world cricket. He looks forward to working with players like Joe Root and Harry Brook, aiming to support Root in his captaincy and help Brook continue to develop his talent and leadership. Root also conveyed his honour and privilege at being asked to lead the Test team again, highlighting his anticipation of working with Fleming to build a winning environment.

The new coach’s role will officially commence after the upcoming Test series against Pakistan, during which England currently holds seventh place in the World Test Championship standings.
