Glasgow: Mirabai Chanu secures third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold

India experienced its most successful day to date at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, securing one gold and two silver medals. This brings the nation’s total medal count to four, with strong performances from weightlifters and boxers.
Mirabai Chanu, an Olympic silver medallist, was a highlight of Day 4, achieving her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal. Her victory was complemented by silver medals won by Rishikanta Singh and Raja Muthupandi in weightlifting. Additionally, boxers continued their successful run, and the men’s swimming relay team advanced to another Commonwealth final.
Chanu’s Record-Breaking Performance
Saikhom Mirabai Chanu reaffirmed her status as a leading Indian weightlifter by winning gold in the women’s 48kg category. Despite an initial unsuccessful attempt, she delivered a dominant performance, achieving a combined lift of 190kg. She established a new Commonwealth Games record in the snatch with 85kg and lifted 105kg in the clean and jerk to secure the title.
This win marks her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold, following her triumphs in Gold Coast in 2018 and Birmingham in 2022. Her overall Commonwealth Games medal tally now stands at four. Chanu’s dominance was evident as her closest competitor, Ruth Asuquo Nyong of Nigeria, finished 22kg behind with a total lift of 168kg.
Chanu, who had not consumed food or drink for days to maintain her weight, set new Commonwealth and Commonwealth Games records in the snatch, along with new CWG marks in the clean and jerk and total lift. She overcame a nervous start, failing her opening snatch attempt at 82kg, but quickly recovered to successfully lift 82kg and then set a new Commonwealth record. Similarly, after failing her first clean and jerk attempt, she successfully lifted 105kg in her second attempt, securing the gold and breaking the Commonwealth Games record in that category and the total lift mark.
Weightlifting Silvers and Boxing Progress
Rishikanta Singh Chanambam delivered a notable performance, earning a silver medal in the men’s 60kg event. The lifter from Manipur successfully cleared 116kg, 119kg, and 121kg in the snatch, with his best effort matching the Commonwealth Games record. He managed 143kg in the clean and jerk, finishing with a total lift of 264kg. Malaysia‘s Muhammad Anik bin Kasdan secured gold with a Games-record total of 273kg, while Kenya‘s Joshua Amunga Buoya took bronze with 260kg.
Raja Muthupandi contributed another silver medal for India in the men’s 65kg category, ensuring three weightlifting medals for the day. The lifter from Tamil Nadu recorded 126kg in the snatch and 160kg in the clean and jerk, for a combined total of 286kg. Malaysia‘s Muhamad Aznil Bin Bidin won gold with a Commonwealth Games record total of 299kg, and Papua New Guinea‘s Morea Baru claimed bronze with 282kg. This silver marks a return to the podium for Muthupandi, eight years after his debut in Gold Coast in 2018.
Indian boxers also had a productive day. Jadumani Singh Mandengbam advanced to the quarter-finals of the men’s 55kg category by defeating Pakistan‘s Sumama Rehman with a unanimous 5-0 decision. Preeti Pawar also moved to the quarter-finals in the women’s 54kg Round of 16, defeating Malawi‘s Deborah Mtenje by referee stops contest (RSC). However, Aditya Pratap Yadav narrowly lost to Uganda‘s Nuhu Batte in the men’s 65kg Round of 16 by a 3-2 split decision.
Swimming and Other Events
India‘s men’s 4x200m freestyle relay team, consisting of Srihari Nataraj, Aryan Nehra, Aneesh Gowda, and Dhakshan Shashikumar, qualified for the final after finishing third in Heat 2. The team clocked 7:39.48, securing progression behind Australia and England. They later finished sixth in the Commonwealth Games final.
