Liverpool 4-2 Sunderland: Watch highlights and full replay of pre-season game in Nashville

Iraola’s Winning Start in Nashville

Andoni Iraola secured a victory in his inaugural match as head coach of Liverpool, with the team defeating Sunderland 4-2 in a pre-season fixture held in Nashville. The game marked Liverpool’s opening match of their summer tour in the US. Iraola, who assumed the role in June, expressed satisfaction with certain aspects of his team’s performance, particularly a well-executed team play that led to the first goal.

The match saw Kieran Morrison open the scoring for Liverpool. However, Sunderland managed to take the lead in the second half. Liverpool then rallied with goals from Dominik Szoboszlai, Federico Chiesa, and Lewis Koumas, ultimately securing the win at GEODIS Park.

Match Highlights and Key Moments

The game featured several notable moments, beginning with an early injury concern for Liverpool. Defender Joe Gomez, acting as stand-in captain, was substituted early in the match due to what appeared to be a muscle issue. He was replaced by Ifeanyi Ndukwe just 10 minutes into the game.

Liverpool’s first goal under Iraola came in the 13th minute, courtesy of Kieran Morrison. This goal followed a team move involving McConnell, Ngumoha, and Elliott, who set up Morrison for a low shot into the bottom corner. Sunderland equalised in the 28th minute after McConnell lost possession, allowing Le Fee to score from 25 yards. Sunderland then took the lead in the 49th minute when Tuterov finished confidently after Frimpong lost possession.

Liverpool responded strongly in the second half. Dominik Szoboszlai leveled the score in the 56th minute with a powerful volley from the left edge of the box, following a break down the left involving Koumas and Kerkez. Federico Chiesa put Liverpool back in front in the 72nd minute, scoring from a tight angle after being fed by Ramsey. The final goal for Liverpool came in the 85th minute, with Lewis Koumas finding the net after Szoboszlai set him up.

Iraola’s Assessment and Injury Concerns

Following the match, Andoni Iraola acknowledged the different dynamics of each half. He noted that Sunderland was stronger in the first half, and while his team lacked some freshness due to recent training, he viewed the game as a positive starting point for improvement. The coach highlighted the injury to Joe Gomez as the “worst news” of the day, especially given Liverpool’s desire to avoid injuries ahead of the new campaign.

Gomez has a history of injuries, and his early exit from the pre-season match is a concern for Iraola. This is particularly relevant as Ibrahima Konate departed the club on a free transfer at the end of last season. Additionally, Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet were also absent from the Nashville game due to injuries. Leoni, who signed last year, is expected to be out for several months after suffering an ACL injury last September, while Jacquet, a recent signing from Rennes, missed the game with a minor knock after recovering from a shoulder issue.

Despite the injury setback, the performance offered several positives for Iraola. The team’s ability to gel and score eye-catching goals, particularly as the game progressed in the Nashville heat, was a source of encouragement. All 22 players who participated are expected to benefit from this initial competitive outing of the pre-season.

Liverpool’s pre-season schedule continues with upcoming matches. They are set to face Wrexham on July 30 in New York, followed by a game against Leeds on August 2 in Chicago. The team will then return to Anfield for matches against Monaco on August 9 and Como on August 16.
