The Hundred: teams vie for knockout stage qualification as group phase nears end

The Hundred: Who needs what to progress from group stages?

Women’s Competition Qualification Scenarios

The sixth edition of The Hundred is approaching the conclusion of its group stage. In the women’s competition, Trent Rockets and Southern Brave are in strong positions, each having secured five wins from six matches. A single victory or even a no-result would guarantee their progression to the knockout stages, though they would need to continue winning to secure the top spot and a direct path to the final.

Manchester Super Giants are also contenders for first place, currently with 14 points from six matches, positioning them well for the knockout stages. However, they would require the teams above them to lose their remaining two matches to claim the top position.

Other teams like Welsh Fire (12 points from six matches), Sunrisers Leeds (eight points from five matches), London Spirit, and Birmingham Phoenix (both with six points from five matches) still have a chance to reach the knockout stages. Their qualification would likely depend on winning all their remaining games and favourable outcomes in other matches, as well as their net run-rate. MI London, with one tie and four losses from five games, cannot advance to the knockout stages.

Men’s Competition Qualification Scenarios

In the men’s competition, Trent Rockets lead with five wins and one loss from five matches. One more win from their two remaining fixtures would likely be sufficient for qualification due to their strong net run-rate. Welsh Fire are also well-placed with four wins from six games.

Manchester Super Giants currently hold third place based on net run-rate. However, they could be overtaken by MI London if the reigning champions do not lose their upcoming match. Sunrisers Leeds, with 12 points, are also in contention for a knockout spot, needing to win their remaining games and rely on other results. Southern Brave (two wins from six games), London Spirit, and Birmingham Phoenix (both with one win from five) face a challenging path to qualification, requiring a significant turnaround in results.

The group stages for both competitions are scheduled to conclude on Wednesday, 12 August. The eliminator match, featuring the second and third-placed teams, will take place on Friday, 14 August at The Oval. The final is set for Sunday, 16 August at Lord’s.

Understanding Net Run-Rate

Net run-rate is a key factor in separating teams with an equal number of points. It is calculated by subtracting the opposition’s run-rate from a team’s own run-rate. In a tournament, this involves taking the average runs per over scored by a team in each game and subtracting the average runs per over scored against them in each game.

If a team is bowled out within their allotted overs, their run-rate is determined by dividing their runs by the maximum overs they could have batted, which is 20 overs in The Hundred. Teams with the same number of points are initially separated by net run-rate, and if that remains equal, their head-to-head record is used.

Remaining fixtures for the men’s teams include matches such as London Spirit vs MI London, Birmingham Phoenix vs Sunrisers Leeds, and MI London vs Trent Rockets. The playoffs will feature an eliminator match on August 14, followed by the final on August 16.

Teams earn four points for a win, while a loss yields no points. In the event of an abandoned, tied, or unfinished match, both teams receive two points. The top three teams advance to the playoffs, with the first-placed team directly qualifying for the final, and the second and third-placed teams competing in the eliminator.
